This six-month program focuses on the development of effective classroom teaching techniques to students in non-English speaking countries and to non-immigrants in U.S. classrooms.

Who should take this program?

Both prospective and current English teachers can substantially improve their knowledge of English language teaching in this program.

Anyone taking this program will:

Qualify for Optional Practical Training after nine consecutive months of certificate study (in combination with the Special Studies in TEFL Program, for example).

What this program includes:

The program consists of the following Core courses

- Theory and Methods of Reading Instruction (27 hours)
- Teaching Writing for Academic and Professional Purposes (27 hours)
- Best Methods in Teaching Pronunciation and Fluency (27 hours)
- Best Methods in Teaching Speaking Skills (27 hours)
- Advanced Analysis of English Sentence Structure I(27 hours)
- Theories of Second Language Acquisition (27 hours)
- Best Methods in Teaching Listening Skills (27 hours)

Students can choose from several electives, depending on what is offered each quarter. Some examples are:

- Advanced Analysis of English Sentence Structure II

- American Culture-Efective Presentations for Teachers

- Business Writing for Non-Native Speakers

- Computer Assisted Language Learning

- Games in the EFL Classroom

- Grammar and Editing

- Grammar Workshops I, II, III, IV

- Music in the EFL Classroom

- Pronunciation Workshop: Special Asian Needs

-Teaching TOEFL Preparation

- Workplace EFL: Teaching English in International Business & Industry

In addition, students may take one three-hour or four-hour class per week in high-intermediate to advanced English Language Institute classes each quarter from the Ten-Week English Language Institute curriculum. Courses vary quarterly.

*TEFL students are required to provide a copy of transcripts for the two most recent years of academic studies and a one page statement explaining why you would like to take the TEFL Certificate or the Special Studies in TEFL program with their application.

Language Requirements:

Six-month program: 69 internet-based TOEFL, 525 paper-TOEFL, 195 computer-based TOEFL, 690 TOEIC


Super-intensive 12-week Summer TEFL program: 79 internet-based TOEFL, 550 paper-TOEFL, 213 computer-based TOEFL, 760 TOEIC

NOTE: If a proof of English language proficiency or any other required application document is submitted later than the application deadlines for 2009 TEFL programs, a $100 USD late-submission fee will be required if we are able to accommodate a late application review and if there is space in the program.
Days: Monday-Friday, some Saturdays. Schedules vary.
Time: Varies. Most classes are in the afternoon and evening.
Location: Most classes are held on or near the main UCSD campus in La Jolla. Transportation is the responsibility of the student, as some courses may be held at other locations.
Length of Program: 6 months; 12 weeks in summer only
Hours of instruction: Mostly afternoon classes; 12-14 hours a week; Monday-Friday, some Saturdays and evenings; schedules vary.
Summer intensive: approx. 30 hours weekly.

For all 2009 TEFL Programs - After a student has been admitted into a TEFL program, a change to a different TEFL program requires the approval of the TEFL Program Coordinator and a $125 USD program change fee.
